Building Intelligent Applications with Azure Cognitive Services
Laurent Bugnion (Microsoft Azure)
Data Science and Artificial Intelligence are fascinating areas of computing. Microsoft is betting a lot on these new technologies, but we are also aware that data scientists are highly trained professionals, and that not every software developer can create and maintain complex data models, perform linear algebra or purchase expensive GPU rigs to run these models. This is exactly why we created Cognitive services. This suite of services offers pre-trained models that you can use out-of-the-box to perform operations in Vision, Speech, Knowledge, Search and Language. In this session, Laurent Bugnion, a Cloud Developer Advocate with Microsoft will show you how you can use cognitive services to enhance your applications with advanced capabilities, how you can refined the trained models with your own data and how you can integrate Cognitive Services with other Azure services to automate tasks.
15:30
15:30 - 16:00
Can an AI Assistant be as Important as the Web or as Mobile?
Adam Cheyer (Samsung Mobile)
AI assistants are used billions of times each week and have been baked into more than a billion consumer devices. People talk to them to accomplish functions like playing songs, sending text messages, setting timers, and more. However, while these assistants are useful, today they are not a global paradigm like the Web or like Mobile, which impact every connected user and every connected business. In this talk, we will discuss what it might take for an Assistant to make the leap to global paradigm, and then demonstrate the unique architecture and approach being taken by Samsung’s Bixby Assistant with the goal of doing just that.
16:00
16:00 - 16:25
Behind the Scenes Development in an AI Company
Matija Ilijas (Microblink)
Creating any type of company takes enormous amounts of effort, hard work, and persistence. Let alone an Artificial Intelligence company. As we can assure you, it will take a lot more than the above and adding just a team of brilliant AI scientists to build complex real-world AI solutions. In this talk, we will show you the crucial roles of development teams in a high-performing Artificial Intelligence company.

Build and Deploy PyTorch Models with Azure Machine Learning
Henk Boelman (Microsoft)
Take a deep look into Azure Machine Learning, a cloud service that helps you build, train, deploy, and manage models. Walk through the data science process and then have some fun creating a ML recognition model based on the Simpsons cartoon with PyTorch. You'll leave this session with a better grasp of the technological components of Azure Machine Learning services.
16:55
16:55 - 17:20
Using AI to Build AI: Automated ML
Dmytro Turchyn (Microsoft)
In search of perfect model, Data Scientists experiment with different models, hyperparameters and features. This is a highly iterative process, taking lots of time and requiring searching extensive pool of models and parameters. Automated ML is an approach, where the AI-assisted system takes most of this overhead away by choosing the most probable model candidates, sets of hyperparameters and features based on provided data and its distribution, and statistical analysis of the millions of previously trained models. Then, Automated ML will help extract features and run experiments in parallel leveraging cloud resources in Azure, providing the best models candidates based on defined accuracy criteria. Additionally, Azure Automated ML may apply interpretability methods to explain, which parameters had the biggest impact on results – on average or for the specific prediction. This approach allows to significantly reduce time for initial models and hyperparameters exploration, so that the Data Scientist may obtain several models candidates, to extract model and further fine-tune it or proceed to deployment.

Moving Pictures: Snapshot of The Future of Web Media
Henri Helvetica
The simplicity and tranquility of text layout in the nascent days of the web would be thrown into a kind of digital disrupt on a cold February night. Marc Andreessen, one of the leads on the NCSA Mosaic browser would propose the addition of a new HTML tag: IMG. It was believed that adding images to the web would promote experimentation, and push the web forward. Indeed forward the web went, as it brought on not only still images, but eventually moving pictures - video. We now have a mélange of media coming down the wire and at an increasingly higher rate every year. Since the collection of such data, image bytes are up 120% annually in the last decade, and video bytes are up an immeasurable 66000% in 4 yrs - both on mobile! All this rich data has made for challenging performance, and engineers have been feverishly researching solutions around greater media compression . ‘Moving Pictures’ will explore the ways engineers are tackling this problem, through browsers APIs, but specifically current research around (you guessed it) new image and video formats used in present day, and planned for future use.
15:30
15:30 - 16:00
Smart Interface Design Patterns
Vitaly Friedman (Smashing Magazine)
You’re a smart cookie. If someone asks you to build a responsive accordion, you’ll figure it out. The same goes for a table. Or a calendar. Or, God forbid, a multi-level-mega-drop-down. But how would you go around slightly more complicated components?
16:00
16:00 - 16:10
Reactivity in Vue.JS 3
Marko Boskovic (Barrage)
In previous versions of Vue we needed abstracted patterns like Higher Order Components (HOC), mixins or props to implement reactivity. The new functional API gives us the ability to encapsulate and reuse logic across multiple components without those abstracted patterns.
16:10
16:10 - 16:35
Optimizing Content Management with the Headless CMS
Bolaji Ayodeji (Hashnode)
Traditional CMS mix content with the frontend code (which is usually stack specific), and this limits the content to just the application it is built upon. With the headless CMS, the frontend component of the CMS is decoupled from the app, content becomes independent, and you don't have to worry about how and where the content gets displayed but instead just storage and delivery of structured content. This content can then be served on different applications any time across all platforms via REST/ GraphQL APIs (JSON, XML) or the Git workflow while maintaining the speed, security, and scalability of the JAMstack architecture. In this talk, Bolaji will show you how content management can be optimized using the headless CMS to ensure the reusability of content across several digital platforms (web, mobile, smartwatches, VR headsets or home assistants).

Micro Frontend Architecture: A Look Into the Future
Ante Tomic (Infobip)
Good frontend development is hard. Scaling frontend development is even harder because you need to ensure that multiple teams can work on a big and complex project simultaneously and without any blockers. Today you often hear about micro frontends which are one of the more controversial Web topics. What are they? Are they worth all the fuzz? Should you implement them? As someone who worked at integrating this in Infobip’s Web Interface, I want to use our example to show you our way of thinking: how did we know that we have problems, how did we decide to approach the implementation of micro frontend architecture and why did we decide to go with it, and which problems we ran into. We will also look at alternate available possibilities useful for anyone.

PoseDance: Build a TikTok Trainer
Jennifer Looper (Microsoft)
Do you scroll through TikTok, amazed at the goofy, yet complicated dance moves featuring today's youths? Those kids are popping off while you're sitting around, coding SQL queries. Fortunately, we are technologists, and there's no problem we can't solve, including getting better at TikTok dancing. In this talk, I'll show you how I perfected my moves by building PoseDance, your friendly TikTok trainer. We'll discuss how I leveraged PoseNet, which allows you to pinpoint body motion and draw a 'skeleton' on a video. Combined with a webcam mapping your own dance skeleton, a bit of math to compare the matching points, Azure functions to authenticate a user, and PlayFab as a game-friendly backend to keep scores and create a leaderboard, you've got the perfect quarantine pastime, making a perfect fool of yourself in front of a webcam. Come dance with me!

Node.js - Scalability Tips
Luciano Mammino (FabFitFun)
You finally built that amazing start up idea you had in mind for years and you did it using Node.js! That's Great! You just launched it on Hacker News and you are very happy and proud... but now more and more people are using it and you start to have a nasty fear that Node.js won't scale, because you now... it's single threaded! Is your project doomed now? Do you have to invest your time on rewriting it in something like C++ or maybe Rust or even Go? You'd rather invest your time on adding valuable features for your users rather than learning a new language and rewriting everything from scratch, but what if nothing works anymore? And... by the way, what the heck ""single threaded"" really means?! Fear no more, dear fellow developer! In this talk we will discuss the architecture of Node.js going through its strengths and its weaknesses. We will then talk about scalability and I will share some valuable tips and tricks to make your Node.js app scale! Spoiler alert: you probably won't need Go or Rust :)

SwiftUI - The Future is Declarative
Goran Brlas (Infinum)
Since its introduction last year, SwiftUI has piqued the interest of most Apple ecosystem developers, but its initial shortcomings and imposed minimal OS support version prevented it from fully taking off. Improvements announced at this year's WWDC, along with the maturation of the toolkit itself mean more and more teams are going to make a switch to a new way of building cross-platform user interface layers that works across iOS, macOS, tvOS, and even watchOS, using just one set of tools and APIs. The shift to a more declarative programming paradigm is here, and we need to be ready for it.

Dynamic CSS
Miriam Suzanne (OddBird)
Don’t let the declarative syntax fool you – CSS is a powerful and dynamic programming language. From the start, it was designed to handle resilient & systematic design across unknown devices, while giving users full control of their experience. Recent features have pushed that vision into new territory: with DOM-aware variables, intrinsic sizing, and dynamic layout tools. We’ll be combining custom properties, client-side calculations, grids, flexbox, & more to create resilient & flexible systems. It’s time to move our style logic back into the language designed for it, without all the invasive Javascript.

WebBundles - JS Delivery without the Tradeoffs
Yoav Weiss (Google)
Delivering Javascript has inherent tradeoffs - large bundles result in better compression and lower processing overhead, but compromise caching granularity and execution parallelism. Wouldn't it be great if we wouldn't have to choose? Web Bundles allow us to have our cake and eat it too! By delivering JS as a single mega-resource, which includes granular resources inside it, this upcoming technology enables us to get the benefits of both approaches. Getting Graphic: Real Editorial Design on the Web with Variable Fonts
Jason Pamental
Graphic designers have customized layouts and title pages in magazines for decades. But limited technology and efforts to ‘systematize’ design has meant we’ve missed out on much of what good graphic design has to offer. Variable fonts combine with other modern CSS techniques to completely change how we think about design for the web. Now that web publishing systems have advanced and we these new capabilities in CSS and variable fonts, it’s time to refocus on specifics. We can create compelling, unique design variations tailored for specific articles and stories rather than stay stuck in a single design for every piece of content. In this talk, Jason will look at powerful examples of publication and cover design, and show how many of those concepts can be incorporated in our own websites in compelling and sustainable ways.

Distillation of the Cloud
Nader Dabit (Amazon Web Services)
In the world of cloud computing the barriers to entry are crashing down with new tooling and services enabling single developers or small groups of developers to accomplish what In the past took large teams often spread out over many different domains. At the same time, we live in a world of too much noise and not enough time. There are dozens, even hundreds, of new projects and services being launched daily, all targeted at developers all pitching you on *something*. Every minute we spend learning something new comes with it an opportunity cost that we will never get back. In this talk I’ll propose what I predict to be the future of software development to be and how you can begin taking advantage of it now, regardless of your domain knowledge or current expertise by leveraging future-proof tooling and services that will allow you to scale not only your applications but also your career, skillset, and value proposition as a developer.

Building Resilient Serverless Systems with "Non-Serverless” Components
Jeremy Daly
Serverless functions (like AWS Lambda, Google Cloud Functions, and Azure Functions) have the ability to scale almost infinitely to handle massive workload spikes. While this is a great solution for compute, it can be a MAJOR PROBLEM for other downstream resources like RDBMS, third-party APIs, legacy systems, and even most managed services hosted by your cloud provider. Whether you’re maxing out database connections, exceeding API quotas, or simply flooding a system with too many requests at once, serverless functions can DDoS your components and potentially take down your application. In this talk, we’ll discuss strategies and architectural patterns to create highly resilient serverless applications that can mitigate and alleviate pressure on “non-serverless” downstream systems during peak load times.

Panel: A Peek Behind the Curtain: VMware Reveals Why it’s All in on Modern Apps
Craig McLuckie, Ben Hale & Nikola Pavesic
VMware is almost synonymous with virtualization. After all, the VM in VMware stands for virtual machines. But the strategy has evolved over the years, from a focus on public cloud, to hybrid cloud, and now to the world of containerization. This session will pull back the curtain on the reason for this shift through a candid conversation between Ajay Patel who is the GM of the Modern Apps business and Craig McLuckie, Founder and CEO of Heptio which VMware acquired in 2018. They will also discuss how the already significant demand placed on app development teams has been increased during the pandemic as organizations look to new business services to adapt customer engagement models, create new revenue opportunities and serve a more distributed set of employees. Together, Ajay and Craig will explain why they believe that delivering these critical business services will require new approaches to teams, tools, processes and architectures.
