Monetizing Open Banking with the only lasting capital we have... Purpose
Conny Dorrestijn (Bankifi)
Open banking is much more than a regulatory requirement, it is all about societal change and it affects all areas of banking from retail to asset management, trading and business banking. With data at the heart, unbelievably accessible and robust technology as an enabler, and a regulatory framework that is ahead in some areas and seriously laps in others we can all see the challenge ahead of us.

This is no upgrade, or a tweak, this is crossing the Rubicon, venturing into the unknown in a complex world where all outcomes are possible and none are predictable by spreadsheet. What does it take to make the leap, or should you stay safe on the other side? In this keynote we will explore some of the essential and existential questions coming our way and Conny will encourage you to urge yourself into action.

It is time for banks to BE the platform, it is time to trust the cloud, it is time to bite back and show the new competitors your teeth, time to embrace your customers and teams and time to rethink partnerships. It is time to monetise this expensive open banking infrastructure. And as we kick off two historic Shift Money days, let's also get some inspiration from historical figures that have enabled Conny to think slow in a fast-paced world and to reach far back in order to leap forward. Get ready to meet Rudyard, Elsje and Johanna. Their timeless lessons will leave you invigorated and inspired to find your purpose in business and life.

The future of DLT and its applications in the financial sector
Josip Maricevic (Tolar.io)
HashNET is a scalable, fast, secure, and fair decentralized blockchain project, leveraging Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) and consensus algorithm which keeps all positive characteristics of a blockchain technology while increasing throughput to more than 50,000 transactions per second. Trade finance is considered one of the most useful applications of blockchain technology in the banking sector. All the involved parties such as a complex transaction can be on-boarded on a blockchain network and the information can be shared by exporters, importers, and banks on one common distributed ledger. Are 4th generation DLT networks up to the task and what makes Tolar HashNET stand out? You can hear all about it in this presentation.

Why your data quality problem is not your user's fault
Murat Abur (Suade)
The classic phrase, "garbage in, garbage out," means that good software needs good data. But what is good data? Good data is often a very abstract and theoretical discussion. It is also an excuse used by IT people to wash themselves of responsibility on the quality of the output. It seems reasonable to say if you give me garbage, how can you expect anything but garbage to come out? Data quality is a hot topic for every software project and while good data might be hard to define, bad data is much easier to identify. Once identified, preventing it should be the software architect's primary mission. In "Discovering FIRE" we will talk about how we developed an open source data model to prevent bad data, common characteristics of bad data and why bad data is largely due to a bad underlying data model.

The Behavioral Economics of Payments; planning for the irrational
Lu Zurawski (ACI Worldwide)
The science of Behavioral Economics assesses how people often make irrational choices when choosing one product over another, and deciding between different payment methods. Financial services firms can use these insights to design products that better align to the feelings and emotions of consumers.

Consumers may welcome personalised services that "nudge" them willingly towards desirable habits in both spending and saving. Government bodies could benefit from these insights to address mixed societal attitudes to payment systems, particularly when shifts towards cashlessness may have been overstated. Market participants of all sizes can use these insights within "customer centric" product design.

This session exposes some of the common biases and heuristics within Behavioral Economics, explores how personalised banking services are evolving to cater for these behaviors, and proposes how payment services can be designed to handle the often irrational choices of users.

The beginning of the end for correspondent banking: have you tried transparency?
Alastair Thompson (TransferWise)
Banks work well on a local level, but once you send money across borders, banking becomes unnecessarily expensive, slow and sneaky. The correspondent banking system was designed nearly 50 years ago: a bank provides services on behalf of another, usually slowing down the process and taking their cut.

TransferWise is building a global banking network that eliminates the need for correspondent banking and therefore kills off the middleman. By 2030, the company will be connected to almost every country in the world, offering money transfers at the real exchange rate.

Antonio Separovic (Oradian)

A whole new financial system is being built from the ground up under our noses and very few are taking notice. In less than a year, half a billion dollars have been poured into decentralized finance and dozens of apps have sprung up, allowing anyone, anywhere to trade, issue, lend, borrow and earn interest. No banks are needed, no third parties, and protocols are open and free for everyone to use. All that's needed is an internet connection. This talk is an overview of the biggest projects and trends in the space and a look at its potential going forward.

Satoshi Bomb: Why Economic Feasibility Can Lead to the Bitcoin Collapse
Alexey Malanov (Kaspersky Lab)
Everyone knows about the "Attack 51%"" on Proof-of-Work blockchains. However, not everyone knows about the rules of regular adaptation of mining difficulty in the Bitcoin network. Based on these rules, we will consider the strategy of miners, which allows to increase profits, but at the same time reduces the overall network hashrate and resistance to "Attack 51%". We will show that the use of this strategy is beneficial to each miner individually, but it is disadvantageous to all as a whole. This is a classic "Tragedy of the commons" situation. We will consider the reasons why miners still do not apply the described strategy, and when they will start to do it.

Why Open API platforms provide the building blocks for innovation in payments
Ian Johnson (Marqeta)
The payments market is one of the fastest growing areas of finance. According to McKinsey, the commercial value of the global payments market is set to be worth as much as $3 trillion by 2022. Much of this growth has been accelerated by the adoption of Open APIs, but much like in the early days of open source the value of an Open API approach is not yet well-known. In this presentation, Ian Johnson, Head of European Growth, Marqeta will examine why newer entrants or challengers to the payments sector have rejected the legacy model of private and closed APIs, which give the API publisher full control over how applications are developed. Instead, Ian will make the case for payments platforms that are built by developers for developers, with Open APIs that hand full control of programmes and applications back to the client. The value of this ‘try before you buy' approach lies in providing clients with the ability to launch products incredibly quickly and the responsibility to adapt their technology to respond to market needs. Any company that wants to reach its full potential in payments market and quickly, should be embracing this cultural and technological shift with open arms.

Nikola Pavesic (Nikkei) - Moderator,

Daniel Lenardic (KPMG),
Dejan Donev (KeksPay),
Luka Tomaskovic (Zagrebacka Banka)
Contactless payment systems and the spread of mobile technology is growing at a fast pace, along with the establishment of Open Banking, which is helping push the development of digital payment infrastructure, we are on track to a Cashless Society - or are we?
We have brought some of the biggest names pushing digital payments, to talk about their experiences, struggles, hurdles and successes, to get users to go cashless and also, what this means to us as a Society if it continues.

The path for Startups to create meaningful relationships with Traditional Financial Incumbents
Nikola Pavesic (Nikkei) - Moderator,
Dejan Davidovic (Kriptomat),
Nino Surjan (Koios Consulting),
Lennart Koopmans (Magnius),
Svjetlana Petrovic (HPB)
Financial ecosystems are transforming around new financial technology, or “fintech”. As such ecosystems transform, the basis for being seen as legitimate also changes for all actors. Thus, alliances between actors within financial ecosystems are increasingly formed to help gain, maintain, and repair organizational legitimacy.
As fintech startups seek to establish a sense of their legitimacy, simultaneously incumbents seek to maintain and repair their organizational legitimacy. Adopting a legitimacy-based view of strategic alliances, we set out the aspects of organizational legitimacy that incumbents and fintech startups look for in a potential partner and how these aspects meet the legitimacy needs of each partner.
